Sunday we planted an Asian pear tree in honor of Nicolas at the Gedney View house. It stands about twelve feet from a pear tree we planted for Hershey in the fall of 2008. The two trees are able to cross-pollinate, so may our memories of two dogs who wrestled and tried to take bones from each other be enriched by sweet fruit in years ahead (the Nicolas pear tree has some fruit on it already, which we will let ripen this year even though the roots would be stronger if we cut off the fruit).
On the right, we can see Crispin climbing to get an overview of the excavation. Below left Liam helps dig the planting hole next to a patch of meadow flowers we planted last fall.
Crispin came down from his tree to help dance around the Nicolas pear tree to make sure there were no air pockets around the roots. I remember he enjoyed helping with this process when he was 22 months old and we were planting a tree for Hershey.
